Xojo's CEF implementation has an issue with some nVidia cards

Hi. I would like to report an issue in how CEF is implemented in Xojo2022r1.1 (and in Xojo 2021r3.1 too). I have done extensive (at least for me) testing and research prior to posting in this category.

The issue is that dedicated nVidia graphics cards such as the GTX 1060 6GB and the GTX 1050 Ti 2GB specifically are not supported in Xojo’s implementation of CEF (what is referred to as the WebKit HTMLViewer control in 2021r3.1 or simply DesktopHTMLViewer in 2022r1.1) but they are fully supported in the same standalone CEF releases (currently, Xojo 2022r1.1 uses CEF based off Chromium/95.0 and that is the standalone release that I used to test). The hardware acceleration is fully enabled in the standalone releases of CEF but not in Xojo’s CEF implementations (both CEF Chrome/90.0 in Xojo 2021r3.1 and CEF Chrome/95.0 in Xojo 2022r1.1).

The result in Xojo’s CEF is it’s running at almost maxed out CPU and at a very low frame rate (5fps instead of 144fps when run on the standalone CEF release). Xojo’s CEF implementation reports this when visiting this URL: chrome://gpu

Why? The CEF developer told me to report this to Xojo, probably because the CEF standalone has no issues. It’s Xojo’s implementation that has issues as per shown in my first post above.

Here’s Marshall Greenblatt, the main developer of CEF’s message, specifically telling me to report this bug to Xojo:

The CEF Sample App is what I refer to as the standalone CEF and it fully enables hardware acceleration, see the first post, it explains it all.

I don’t quite understand why I would have to do that when all the complete CEF logs are posted above. Will this feedback app work on a computer that doesn’t have Xojo installed? Do I have to do this for all 3 PC’s that have an nVidia graphics card that Xojo’s CEF implementation does not support?

Feedback is the official avenue to report bugs and feature requests to Xojo. This forum is for user interaction and mutual assistance. You will occasionally see a Xojo employee on the forum, but if it ain’t in Feedback, it’s not getting fixed.

Feedback runs independent of whether you have Xojo installed or not. You only need it on the computer you usually use. You don’t need Feedback on all your machines.

No. You don’t need to run it on the machine exhibiting the symptoms.

Do you know the blocklist, about:flags or the command line options used on this CEF Sample App? From your first screenshot maybe Xojo is using a different list/flags/options.

I guess it is not possible to do a chrome://flags and change Override software rendering list or any other options there?

Of course it is. They’re not using CEF directly, it’s a subprocess in which they inject their I/O handles or whatever to be able to execute remote JS among other things I would presume. But yes, the launch command line is different, that’s what I was telling on the other topic 2 days ago, except that I cannot find where it is to manually alter it to test further, so Xojo will have to take care of it by themselves from this point forward. After all, it’s their implementation issue.

Feedback case:
68572 - HTMLViewer (WebKit/CEF) disables hardware acceleration on high end nVidia GPU while standalone CEF does not.

You should add a sample project, logs, screenshots to the case too. Is better for them to have everything on the report there. Hope this helps.

I think you do not understand what the issue is or perhaps you do not care except for wasting my time. Literally visit this URL with the CEF HTMLViewer control: chrome://gpu

If you have one of those nVidia cards that’s not supported in Xojo’s CEF implementation, you will immediately reproduce the issue. I have posted the full CEF dumps at the beginning of the post already, which you seem to have omitted to read since you’re asking for logs again. Please read the topic carefully, it’s all explained in the first post. Hope this helps.

I understand you posted everything here but Xojo staff work on Feedback cases on the Feedback system. Doing what I asked will make the job for them easier than jumping back and forth between the Feedback system and the Forum system.

I’m just trying to help you, help Xojo fix your problem faster.

The testing Staff may ask you to provide the information I asked you to provide on the feedback case regardless it is available on the forum, this is to make the time they spend reviewing and testing the case shorter and more efficient.

I’m sorry, but this is really beginning to look like you’re trolling me. How exactly does a sample project that only contains a HTMLViewer control that connects to chrome://gpu will bring ANYTHING of value to this bug report? The staff will launch the app with a non-nVidia card and see that it works and mark the issue as resolved. Like how is this even relevant?

This is quite ironic given the fact that Rick Araujo just posted a comment on my bug report linking to a topic that contains 102 posts with ABSOLUTELY no additional information of value to this bug report. WAY TO GO! This is a perfect time waster.

Broken in pieces. They could be the entire originals, with proper names, attached to the case, it could “potentially” accelerate their work having as much significant info already collected and appended to the case.

I had cases that I explained things like drag a button to a window, put this line in the action event “whatever()”, run, and press the ESC key. The system will crash. They ignored the report, and made me prepare this “complex” sample and attach to the case or a robot would closing the case if I didn’t in 10 days. I did it. The case was analyzed, confirmed, and then closed. Hahaha.

Not true. It’s full of garbage, but it shows the history, it shows how to diagnose, what GPUs you are having trouble, talks about the CEF support in the CEF forum, etc.

Many missing parts we can’t judge how important they are and not included in your report.
