Why Xojo choose esoTalk?

Hey,

I was looking through the different options for forum software and I was wondering why the Xojo team chose to move to esoTalk instead of sticking to phpbb.

esoTalk and phpBb are both awesome! It seems there are plugins that could enhance Xojo which the Xojo forums are not using, for example signatures.

I was wondering also if Wordpress is a good platform to use to base a software business off of. I know it can be risky basing your business off of somebody else’s platform. I also am wondering about how many people are basing there website on Wordpress?

Thanks

I just they would fix the $%#$#% login remember issue! Other than that I quite like these new forums.

What platform/browser are you using?
Have cookies enabled?

I am using Safari on OSX, and have no issue with it remembering my creditials

I am also having troubles in this manner.

Thanks

I guess the used it because its free, clean simple, customisable and fitted their needs. Some comparisons here: http://www.forum-software.org/forum-comparator/esotalk-vs-phpbb

True. I just don’t understand why the older forums did not suite Xojo’s needs even for the to switch.

Oliver,

just curious… if you had a choice between Chevy and Ford… which would you pick?

Also look at the list - Esotalk supports different languages, more browsers, these would be key decisions for me for a global forum

I’m a Chrome guy, get same issue when I bounce between my Mac, PC @ work and Android tablet. I do use IE and Safari from time to time but I have to have IE9 at work and starting to get “unsupported browser” from some SaaS apps now!

One thing I do like about esotalk is it is based on Bootstrap and is responsive so works on my iPhone et al rather nicely!

If I want to drive around and just look good … Chevy.

If I want a vehicle to use for work Ford.

Honda.

It won’t remember your credentials if you jump machines as the cookie ‘Keep me logged in’ will be on the machine you ticked it on. Also when you swap machines you will get logged out because you have changed IP address. This is a security feature to stop session hijacking etc. Therefore as a function of being logged out your ‘Keep me logged in’ cookie will be set as expired otherwise you would still be logged in. I don’t think its a bug or resolvable without removing the security features.

PS - The above is not fact but what I suspect based on my experience of this type of user authentication

That might be safari having put your credentials in your keychain

I get logged out all the time on Safari on OS X but logging back in is simple because safari does put the user name & pwd in the keychain

Yeah I use my ford for work - as a ramp for my Chevy :stuck_out_tongue:

I can live with that, but it happens when I just use one browser all day at work, come back an hour later, get that nice message telling me forums have been updated, refresh and poof, have to login again. That is just a PITA  sadly.

I often swap machines without being logged out.

Tesla.

This has been covered a few months back and Thom McGrath talks about the root cause.
