Has anyone had issues with Smart App Control blocking their app. I have been marketing this app unsigned on the web not Windows Store for more than 20 years and now suddenly users in Denmark cannot use it.
The only solution is to turn off Smart App Control but that may cause security issues with their system so I’m very reluctant to give this advice. I’m also reluctant to pay the $800 price of a signing certificate to market what is almost freeware.
about windows 11 .. usually there is a popup and you must know how to find the continue button.
last year i used certum and this whole app signature process is terrible and was very annoying.
it was a app made with ms vs 2026 and i work remote in home office for a company.
price is not that much
this Smart App Control is based on reputation then.
i used Standard not Extended Validation and usb stick with chip.

That’s still $717 for 3 years to get that price discount per annum. A bit cheaper than my first quote of $800 but still expensive.
There is no “continue” option after the evaluation period. Once you turn off Smart App Control you cant turn it back on without a computer reset.
Microsoft are rolling this out on a country by country basis so lots of problems ahead.
Yeah, Microsoft sure doesn’t make it cheap or easy. People complain about Apple’s $100/yr fee, but that’s downright reasonable compared to what Microsoft makes you go through.
I strongly recommend NOT getting an OV certificate. Been down that route, wasted my money. Years ago when I started, my reputation was built in a few hours. As of last year at my most recent renewal (new certificate, new reputation) despite at least 2x the downloads per day, after three months I still hadn’t built up the reputation. The bar is very high.
Either pay for the EV certificate, or if it’s available in your country, use Azure Trusted Signing. ATS is only $10 per month and you get an EV certificate.
It sucks, but this is the reality of being a software developer.

try this tool and check if you still can sign you app by ms store for free.
with this tool you can select a setup made with inno setup compiler and it create a new packet for a ms store upload.

Ask Google for Smart App Control to read what it said directly in your language.
From recent experience, EV certificates no longer appear to be much better than OV certificates.
The best solution we found was to use Azure Trusted Signing and to make sure you also sign all of your DLLs.
Fair enough. It was never introduced worldwide when it was conceived. Firstly United States but Europe later on. Maybe Denmark was one of the later or the user hasn’t run the app for a while.
Just seems strange that they are the only one’s having this problem.
Anyway nothing I can do about that - looking for a solution now.
