Setapp

I haven’t seen this mentioned on the forums, and I know that some of you native develop apps for the Mac App Store, so I thought there might be some interest in this.

It’s called Setapp, and it’s essentially a Mac app subscription service:

I haven’t tried Setapp myself, and I’m not sure how I feel about the concept. In any case, it is a potential alternative to the MAS, which seems to be dying a slow death.

Also, Dan Counsell, the founder of Realmac Software (the developer of RapidWeaver), just blogged about their experience with Setapp:

The last time I looked into it Setapp tracks your app usage and pays out developers based on which percentage of apps you use. So it’s constantly tracking your time, which apps you have open, for how long, calculating that, and sending it back to Setapp for evaluation. Without asking. Block this with Little Snitch, and you can’t use the apps.

I am wholly opposed to Setapp (and Devmate) as a user. I’d rather pay full price once, and support the developer directly in the process.
