Rosetta to be phased out in 2027

Starting with MacOS 28, which will be released in late 2027. Still a ways off but it’s a good idea to have it on your roadmap if you target MacOS.

What does it mean in practical terms?

Most importantly it’ll mean you can no longer run Intel apps on the Apple Silicon machines.

These are the big ones I can see:

  • Anything before Xojo 2020 Release 2 will no longer be able to compile for a modern MacOS target.
  • Older Xojo IDEs will probably not even run on MacOS 28 or above.
  • If you’re using any Intel-only-compiled helper apps, they will fail to execute.

All API one web stuff willl soon be dead.

Wow. I’ll have to go through all my dozens of little tools and rebuild them with Apple Silicon support.

I don’t think I will have troubles with my applications made with Xojo but I still have 3 applications I use often which are not ARM. GoogleEarth is one of them and I use it for my job. I don’t understand Google still not update it.

Maybe now they’ll have motivation to update it.
