Panic: more Apple messing about

I have an email from Apple that may as well be in Sanskrit.

We’re reaching out with a final reminder that the Certification Authority (CA) for Apple Push Notification service (APNs) is changing. APNs updated the server certificates in sandbox on January 21, 2025. APNs **production server certificates will be updated on February 24, 2025

To ensure a smooth transition and avoid push notification delivery failures, please make sure that both old and new server certificates are included in the Trust Store before the cut-off date for each of your application servers

Given that I have never heard of an APN or a Trust Store, have no application servers (probably?) and I have no idea how to install a new server certificate, can anyone explain what they are talking about?

Huh, I got this nonsense too. Any why must they use this “reaching out” formulation, when all they’re doing is notifying me of something.

I think it’s one of those things we’d know about if we used it, and not something done automatically inside another signing process. It’s used in mobile apps that send out push notifications.

Well, all certificates eventually expire and get replaced.
And now Apple has a new one and if you use push notifications, e.g. with a PHP script on your server, you may need to update the certificate file.

Thanks for asking; I had the same question.
They could have written “This is only a concern if you use this service” in their mail, that would have been less worrisome.

Or only send it to those who are affected. In January I got an email about the trader status. I checked and did that March last year.

Perhaps they assume anyone could consider this in the future? :man_shrugging:

It could be that it’s because the Xojo framework links to the notification stuff, even if you don’t use it.
