Malware warning for some apps

I have some apps of mine on the Apple Store which I myself use.

Once they are accepted, I use the same pkg (created by AppWrapper) to install them on my machine.

A couple of hours ago I opened one of them (installed a couple of weeks ago but used every day) and I got this nice message:

I opened some of the other apps and they open all right, except one, installed last September.

Shutting down the Mac and booting it did not correct the issue.

No peripherals. Just the Mac.

After re-installing them everything works OK. Although I ask myself, how long?

Anybody seeing this?

I do probably not get that with Sequoia, but with Tahoe (I am sure).
I had a bad idea at a file launch to press Cmd-Option-Esc and the file was flagged and cannot be opened (even if I duplicate it): all tested applications refused with a message to open them and the file was placed in the Trash.
Putting back in the desktop or Documents changed nothing. I throw it away in the Trash and emppty it.

I do not tried to redo that when I launch an application.

Best Christmass wishes.

My brother, opening the app, got this message: it seems it’s related to a AddressBook library missing. In such case, how did the app work all right from 11 September? More: le second app which failded to open, doesnt use AddressBook. Wayting from some other reports from my brother

Another thing: the 2 apps were not the same as the ones delivered to the Apple Store, in the sense that they were not Universal but Arm only, in order to see ARM-only behavior.

That’s not what this error says. The error means that it’s expecting an AddressBook dylib within your app and it’s not there.

IIRC, the address book capability doesn’t work anymore anyway so using it in your apps is pretty much useless anyway.

Agreed. I was actually trying to say the same thing. As for the IIRC tip, thanks.

Meanwhile I received from my brother a message he got from Apple (yet I didn.r recive anything).

The app was built as ARM-64 only in 11 set 25 with a Xojo 2023 version.

Based on that crash report, it could be that the AddressBook plugin doesn’t support ARM and that you’ve been spared up til now because the app has been either an x86-64 or universal binary running under Rosetta until now. It’s also clear that the app was running as ARM this time.

For clarity, Apple’s own docs say that you should be using the newer APIs since macOS 10.11 so it would not surprise me if they’re just gone in macOS 26as that was 10 years ago.

AdressBook was deprecated in Xojo in 2019.

Yes. That I accept. Yet the only other app that at the same time showed the same message (“App cannot be opened”) does not contain any AddressBook feature. I hope Apple will send me a crash Report as they did for the first one. Thanks.

The app cannot be opened message tends to tell you why, but you must know the whole message.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean: how can I know the whole message if Apple does not supply it? If my brother had not sent me the messages he received from Apple about one of the two apps, I’d still be musing about the Malware message, as I’m musing why the second app (not containing addressBook) showed the Malware message, yet, re-installing from the same pkg the Arm-only app behaves all right.

The message you’re seeing is for regular users. Apple provides a tool with Xcode to “enhance” crash logs for developers and show the full crash log (my favorite is as a notification). There you’ll see the full crash log.

I’m sorry, I had forgotten about the actual malware message that stated this thread. That was my mistake, I apologize.

That one, honestly, I would have no idea where to start since companies like Apple are difficult to contact these days. Maybe use your developer program yearly support ticket?

My apps are signed, but not notarized. I just install the pkg on my machine and send it to my brother. So I guess this could be the real reason.

On the other end, why, after months of regular use, show the Malware message on two apps on the same day and more or less the same time , while the other apps installed in the same way carry on all right? But these, at present, are just rethorical questions. I mean, the very probable reasons have been pinpointed; yet I feel something odd in the whole situation.

Sorry, my bad. I just said the apps were not notarized. Actally I’m pretty sure the one sent to my brother was zipped and notarized. And the second one had been installed only on my machine (not notarized).

For what it’s worth, I just ran into the dialog today with a piece of open source software. It was code signed but not Notarized.

I also learned you can find out the notarization status with Terminal:

spctl -a -vvv -t install /path/to/4getMeNot.app

You can quickly unquarantine and launch apps Apple didn’t approve with this:
