Local deployment

I have created a new desktop app on windows. I plan to deploy it to MYSELF on maybe 2 or 3 laptops I have at the office…. They will be windows laptops with windows 10 or maybe 11….

I have no plans to deploy to anyone else.

Is it possible for me to just email my built app to myself and run it that way? (Or a USB drive) People on the forum talk about installers and it seems like overkill for my needs… if I create an update in a few weeks I could move it wherever I need at my leisure.

John

you could start the app from a office network drive via link.
copy the build folder (send to zip) to one drive (ms account) and then into your network/NAS.

You need the sub folders so you’d need to zip it, but yeah you can just run it. For convenience you could also wrap it in something like BoxedApp to make it a portable exe.

Emailing applications is virtually impossible these days. Virus mean that almost every email system will reject .exe, .dll etc files. Other applications on other platforms too. It’s just not worth the effort to even try to email software to people (including yourself).

Even zipping tends to be checked en route and blocked in the same way. Even renaming the zip to something else is frequently looked for, zip has a very easy to spot signature.

A password protected zip will bypass security scans.

I do it all the time. I just copy all the folders, files and the app that Xojo creates to a folder and run it there. If I need to copy it elsewhere, I can just zip it all up and send to my google Drive, or put it on a USB stick. Works fine.

True, but its far more straightforward to just copy to usb.
