Learning more about using declares

Hello everyone,

I like to learn more about using declares. So I was looking for more information over the internet and on this forum but I did not actually found what I was looking for.

What I am looking for is a complete beginner explanation how to :

  1. Understand how to use them
  2. A list of all available declares and libraries with explanations

I am sure there are other people like me willing to learn more about declares but do not know where to start.

Maybe a valid request for Paul Lefevre to create a beginners webinar about how to use declares. I and surely others will find that very usefully.

Anyway any information will be very much appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Chris

Hi Eli,

Thank you for your fast reply.

Regretfully I already visited that link and I got a security warning that the website is not safe to visit. As a rule, I never open websites when I receive a security warning.

Thank you anyway for your help which is very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

I don’t know what that security warning comes from (maybe blacklisted somehow?) but I would not let it stop me if I wanted to learn about declares. The site contains a free book/course on declares in Xojo (Realbasic, actually), and although I have got that warning in the past, I never noticed any malware problem after visiting that site.

As for the list of declares, it would be infinitely long because in addition to the system declares (different on each platform and very numerous in each platform) you can use declares to use dynamic libraries (dll-s in windows, I don’t know the extensions/formats for the other platforms), which you could create yourself, or find on the internet, … so such a list cannot be made.

On Windows, you could check the MS devepment network: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh447209(v=vs.85).aspx , but I would certainly not advice doing that.

Julen

Hello Julen,

Thank you very much for your reply and your explanation.

I followed your suggestion and opened the website. It is indeed safe because MalwareBytes, MalwareFighter and Avast did not give any warning. The warning came from Firefox itself and there is something wrong with the security certificate. It is already expired. That is probably the reason for the warning. After opening I also cannot find something wrong. It is safe to visit.

Both Julen and Eli, thank you again very much for your support, which is very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Chris

The relevant pages to this site seem to have disappeared - does anyone have any other links to some relatively simple info on how one might write declares?

Cheers all.

If you are programming Declares for Windows, then there is a book available at: Xojo Declares for Win32

Try this link and use the buttons at the top of the page to navigate. The above link was just missing the specific html pages.

I bought this book a few days ago, and it is excellent.
A better title would have been “Xojo declares for idiots”, detailed and clear writing.

I was waiting for this to come out since you first announced it a while back. I guess I did not see the notification that it came out. Can’t wait to start going through it.

EDIT: That’s what a two week vacation will do. Vacation was great so I am not complaining, but that’s when I missed it. Thanks for coming out with this topic Eugene.

Thanks loads for these links folks!

(I hope I am not going down a rabbit hole with this subject.)

You very well might. Often times declares may feel like an adventure game with improbable clues found in obscure tomes and random evil wizardry. But in the end, results are enchanting

That’s news to me. What warning did you get?
