Get real device type from iOS device

I use this code to identify the real device type on iOS devices. This works very good, but not in debug mode on Xcode Simulator. Does anybody know how can I add this c-code in my method “DetectHW”?

case “i386”, “x86_64”, “arm64”: return “Simulator (mapToDevice(identifier: ProcessInfo().environment[“SIMULATOR_MODEL_IDENTIFIER”] ?? “iOS”))”

A part of the original code from Stackoverflow:

case "AudioAccessory1,1":                             return "HomePod"
            case "AudioAccessory5,1":                             return "HomePod mini"
            case "i386", "x86_64", "arm64":                       return "Simulator \(mapToDevice(identifier: ProcessInfo().environment["SIMULATOR_MODEL_IDENTIFIER"] ?? "iOS"))"

The code was working until release 2024, but now with 2025R2.1, I got this error:

Module1.systeminfo, line 1: Syntax error

This is the Structure systeminfo:

Structure systeminfo
sysname as string*256

nodename as string*256

release as string256
version as string
256
machine as string*256
End Structure

Any idea why this no longer works?

I found another code on Stackoverflow:

extension UIDevice {

public static let hardwareModel: String = {
    var path = \[CTL_HW, HW_MACHINE\]
    var n = 0
    sysctl(&path, 2, nil, &n, nil, 0)
    var a: \[UInt8\] = .init(repeating: 0, count: n)
    sysctl(&path, 2, &a, &n, nil, 0)
    return .init(cString: a)
}()

}

UIDevice.hardwareModel // → iPhone9,3

But I don’t know how it can be used in Xojo.

The structure in the IDE is fubarred, just look at it. Someone else had the same kind of problem recently but did not report back about fixing their structure.

Just use system.Device that returns a system.DeviceData class with the info you need

This will only return iPhone or iPad, not the device type like ‘iPhone18,4’ for an “iPhone 17 Air”

system.Device.Model

App.Opening: system.Device.Model=iPad

Maybe a naming conflict with system names, try renaming systeminfo or the other items.

Nonsense you can get version info

How can I get version info?

If I use these values, I get the device identifier (hw_machine), but the application crashes.

Structure systeminfoPPS4Me

hw_type As String’*150

Module1.DetectHW: hw_type = arm64

hw_type = arm64 is the hw_machine value. For debug arm and on a real device iPhone8,4

Example:

Any idea?

Also I try for use this declare, but ist also shows an error.

Declare Function sysctlbyname Lib “libc.dylib” (name As CString, value As Ptr, ByRef size As UInt32, newp As Ptr, newlen As UInt32) As Integer

// First call to determine size
Var size As UInt32
Call sysctlbyname(“hw.machine”, Nil, size, Nil, 0)

// Reserve memory
Var p As New MemoryBlock(size)

// Second call: Retrieve value
If sysctlbyname(“hw.machine”, p, size, Nil, 0) = 0 Then
Return p.CString(0) // Device identifier: iPhone15,3
Else
Return “Unknown”
End If

Error: ld: framework not found dylib

This is the complete solution:

Public Function GetHardwareModel() As String
Declare Function sysctlbyname Lib “UIKit” (name As CString, value As Ptr, ByRef size As UInt32, newp As Ptr, newlen As UInt32) As Integer

// First call to determine size

// Second call: Retrieve value
If sysctlbyname(“hw.machine”, p, size, Nil, 0) = 0 Then

var hw_machine As String = p.CString(0) // Device identifier: iPhone15,3

System.Version

Okay, some information, but not the device “hw.machine” value.

name and model ?
