“Create” your own icons 
It is nice to find a site with larger 128 px icons. Good pick. Fatcow is cute, but bitty 32 points is of limited use on Mac. Now, for 512 and 1024 icons, it becomes necessary to dig downright into clipart.
I’ve been using this for a Metro UI app I’m working on.
Interesting, developers buy the major tool, buy plug-ins and may also pay for a web site. But when it comes to icons most developers seem to use free icons.
From my point of view I prefer to buy icons, if the project’s budget allows it I may also consider to buy customized icons.
Syncfusion offer a studio to create Your own icons it’s not the same as free icons.
I can’t argue that Syncfusion’s Metro Studio is “free icons”, but the end result if used is the same as “free icons” since they don’t charge to use the software.
Anyway just wanted to include it, since it has been very helpful to me… not get into another long debate.

Mine as well. Being a Mac user since birth, and developer since 2007 - I expect top notch and will skip over apps with cruddy icons. (especially the main app icon)
Any apps with 1980’s clip art icons do not even get a glance, as far as I am concerned.
Lack of effort on the icon suggests to me, lack of effort all round.

With the vintage trend, 1980 sounds too recent
