I am still running macOS Sierra (10.12.6) on my older iMac as I cannot update any further.
I have seen that it is possible to upgrade with a utility from dosdude and I was wondering if anybody here has any experience with using this and any advice?
I have a new MacBook Pro and have found that some software that I am using on both machines will not work properly on my iMac and, of course, I cannot upgrade to Xcode 11.
I went through the process of updating my old MacBook pro in this way. It seemed to work fine, but was going from Sierra to high Sierra. The problem is that I am not sure that security updates are ok to install, so reverted to the old machine. I have now moved up Catalina and will keep that older machine for testing 32 but apps.
Hope that helps
I used dosdude’s method to update an old 2009 MBP to Catalina, and it went fine.
Watch his youtube video, there’s some steps to follow. But now I have a machine that wasn’t much use to me that I can test Catalina on without affecting my main machine (which is still on Mojave for the time being).
I will not be at my main machine until Friday this week so will delay my decision until then. The problem is that I dont have the finances at present to update my iMac as I have only just purchased a new MacBook Pro. My main iMac is a work machine, not a backup and I am fearful that I could end up with an unusable machine which I rely upon.
I do need at least Mojave to run but it is a 2011 machine that cannot be upgraded. Do you think I should take the step to upgrade to Mojave, not Catalin?
I have a C2D macBookPro (7,1) currently running High Sierra
Machine is super slow (but considering what it is… )
Anyways… I think I will try this DosDude upgrade for Catalina once the battery is recharged , since it has been lanquishing on the shelf for at least a year

I was thinking of trying DosDude on my old 2010 MacBook Pro this weekend
WOW… I just watched his video… and perhaps its just “me”… but he made it very unclear as to why (or what) was on an external drive, what was on an internal drive… what was done for you and what was manual.
I got totally lost… a Simple checklist would have been nice…
He kept saying things like you “could do” but “I’m not going to”… etc…
So at this point, since I am not clear as to the precise steps… I’m not going to risk bricking my laptop
Brian… if you do it, and can publish a 1-2-3 list of steps that would be great.

Dave,
I will watch the video again as I plan on trying this weekend
Will for sure report if fail or success and my steps if successful
I will delay updating my machine until I see the result of your test. I will not be upgrading to Catalina but want Mojave. The process is different from what I see but the reason I am not going to Catalina is that I would have to format my hard drive to APFS and I don’t want to lose anything from my hard drive at present.
Just a few weeks ago I used dosdude’s stuff to upgrade an old Mac Mini (from 2011, I think?) to 10.14 (10.13 was the last supported OS release on that hardware).
It worked perfectly. The only issue was that some of the colors in finder were a little off - iirc, the background color of title bars was a little darker than normal.
All the apps on the machine worked perfectly, though.
I guess I’m just unable to follow a series of audio/video instructions that don’t follow a linear path.
if someone feels so inclined, and might translate all that “you might want to”, and “Im not doing that” into a specific checklist?
I’m the type of person that needs to look at a list, and go, “Ok… I did that, and it worked… Next step…” etc.

i just installed Mojave on to my Macbook Pro 15" inch from Mid 2010 (MacbookPro6,2) using a Stiick created by the Mojave Patcher Tool 1.3.5.[/quote]
Did you do a clean install of your MacBook or an upgrade?
By this I mean did you reformat your MacBook hard disk during the installation process?
The reason I ask is that I don’t want to reformat my hard disk, just upgrade to Mojave.

Hello,
I did an Upgrade Installation. So all Software an Data was keep’d in Place. So i installed it without formating the Harddrive.
Till now i have not found something that’s not working right. But i also have not tested everything.

That’s what I wanted to hear!
I want to update my work machine and did not want to try it until I had heard that it was not a huge issue. I have already created the Mojave USB drive so can boot up into Mojave on my mid-2011 iMac but have just not clicked on the update button yet.
I have a brand new MacBook Pro (2019) but my iMac is the mid-2011 model and is the one I work on all day. I don’t have an old mac that I can try the upgrade on and am a little worried that I could end up with an unusable iMac that I rely on daily.
Please report back when you have more thoroughly tested the functioning of your upgrade.
