I set a text field to a color. It launched and was fine.
At some point I started changing properties of the textfield - now, when I run the app, that field has no color. Is there a property I may have changed that would cause this?
This IS a field I want to be locked from the user (so they cannot edit its contents)
Not on macOS.
Please be more specific:
running OS

are a minimum, eventually.

OP does not disclose that and so I do not locked the TextField (and ran macOS).

I just took a guess it was Windows 
And there you have it. I AM on windows even though I’m a Mac guy. I like the color for this field, and absolutely can’t let the user change the content. The field holds a patient account number and chart updates are based on that number. Maybe I can figure a work-around! Thanx all for your replies. This IS a great group!
Maybe a Label will work for you?

it actually appears a label cannot have a background color… No worries - i have bigger fish to fry
