Can you make ends meet with Xojo? (o;

Hello John, if you see what visual promatrix and visual extend offers in combination with west wind tools plus now you have a vfp compiler and a lot of things now at github. I went to the last geek gatherings, and after all those years vfp is still alive an kicking .

As long the world talks microsoft its a good option. But for a long term, XOJO is a better choice.

Servoy : I have also tried it, another option is Liana, … and many more.
Before FoxPro I used Clipper . SFR ( from Germany ) sold DBÜ , write XBASE and use a C-Compiler for the rest. But they stopped when Win 3.1. came so my journey to FoxPro started.

But this concept is still alive see : X#

Good evening

Many thanks for all your valuable inputs :slight_smile:

Seems clearer now to be…also that currently in our department we have a new boss you likes to scare away all old people as experience means nothing and he still doesn’t know what I am capable of after almost a year now.

My focus is where I come from: Electronics and Networking.

Already doing a project for a FPGA IDE on macOS as on macOS electronics software is hard to find or just not available, besides the great KiCAD.

Another focus is inventory systems…did once one for Novartis in Switzerland where all Cisco devices including modules, fibre panels and links were modeled. Though it was a web application.

Thinking now more on a larger scale…towards BIM, electricity, networking, water, heating, everything in an inventory system.

Depends on your niche. There’s a lot of companies out there that think custom software would be super expensive. I do around 4 projects with xojo per year for a local media event company. Last project was an ATM built into an ebike that vended tacos and dog treats. Typically a windows touchscreen and a microcontroller are involved.

Xojo web also worked great for an offline multi station tablet enrollment system for bumble event, basically a macbook server was in a box and the iPads connected to a LAN only router on a battery.

Glad this tool exists, hope it keeps getting better.

There is a need for alternatives in the building environmental controls. There are a few big companies that have 90% of the work. Their fees for materials and labor are very high. There is a niche to service medium sized companies that can’t afford the high prices.

The projects involve micro controller hardware, electrical and mechanical engineering ability, as well as wired and wireless networking knowledge. The software is part XOJO, Arduino or other micro-controller programming language (C++), JavaScript, and HTML. Modbus skills are a big help

I joined my brothers mechanical contracting firm after retiring from the electronics industry a little over a decade ago. I bid for a job and won it by being about 3/4 of the lowest bid. We made more money on that project than we did on all of the other contracts we had. I thought about pursuing more work like this, but this was not our business model, and I was the only one that could fulfill a contract like this. I had a lot of fun, but I was getting old and running out of steam, and there was no way I could train the others to be able to complete a project.

There is an opportunity for someone who can fulfill it.

Love this post! How would one go about getting experience with this type of work?

Well glad I have a broad field :wink:

Apprenticeship as Radio/TV electronics repair, then onto electronics industry doind die bonders (machines that pick chips from wavers and put it into package).
Later on CompuServe doing web applications (remember them where all employees had an address starting with 111111? :wink:
Then network engineering and consultancy for major ISPs here in .ch.
Now working in the field of IoT, Smarthome, embedded electronics, wireless technology.
And as hobby doing wood working, CNC millimg, plasma cutting and TIG welding :wink:
Dunno how long I keep my job as due to a complete take over of a large German company they want to force me to be more present in the office. Which means almost everyday a commute time of 6 hours or spend loads of money in hotel stays, leaving almost nothing at the end of month (o;
That‘s why I‘m thinking of doing apps with Xojo for customers. In the past I mostly did them as web apps for making life simpler for others.

Just popped into my mind if there exists an online directory with Xojo developers showing their skills/fields and ther work they‘re done.

So customers could look them up by skills and location.

This is a really good idea!

Multiple exist. Prominent ones including Upwork and Freelancer

Good evening (o;

Well it happened now…my company has no use for me and my creativity in the innovation department due to new management. So I’m laid off by end of this year…though paid until February 2025…

Let’s hope there’s a big sale coming up on black Friday for Xojo to upgrade my license as I have plenty of ideas (o;

Push your products out ASAP, and don’t count with luck, but good luck. :wink:

The “we do not need you anymore” is rampant currently.
Best of luck to you BUT now might be the time to let your Entrepreneurship shine :slight_smile:

In same boat after 20 years of dedicated employment.

Sorry to hear that, Richard. If it’s any consolation, every time a job has ended for me, what’s come after has always been better.

Surprisingly was all the support from my team there…we already thougjt of doing our own business :wink:

Wouldn‘t be a bad troup with:

  • 2 electronic engineers
  • 1 mechanical engineer
  • 1 firmware engineer
  • And me doing desktop/mobile apps, IoT, network design, database, electronics, programmable logic

Still a lot of work to do, but looks promising :wink:

And even more time now for TIG welding and building my CNC plasma cutting machine….let‘s see if I can do a Xojo app for controlling it (o;

From time to time when sitting long in front of a computer you just need to get your hands dirty and pump 180A with the welding machine into steel :wink:

@Richard_Klingler : good luck!

All the best Richard!
Don’t forget you need a capable person to handle the business development part as well, though you can do it yourself for now i believe.

I’m sorry to hear that, Richard.

Hopefully with your obvious wide range of skills, I’m sure you’ll do well in your next endeavour. All the best to you.
