Bash script to make incremental backups of a postgres database

Hi everyone,

I found a nice backup script (for macos or linux) for a postgres database

it makes a backup folder, with 3 folders inside for daily, weekly and monthly backup.
it works nice, only problem is it does not clear old backups by itself.
it keeps only one backup per day, so in the daily folder we only have 7 backups
but in the weekly and monthly folders, it goes on and on … and fills the disk if you don’t remove it by hand.

my bash-fu is kind of limited, and if I quite understand what the script does, I’m not able to correct it to do some cleaning of the folders, like having some constant to allow a max number of files in a folder.

Hi. Add these lines:

add between line 419/420 of Version 1.0 of script:
find "$BACKUPDIR/monthly" -type f -mtime +364 -delete

add line at 440 of Version 1 of script:
find "$BACKUPDIR/weekly" -type f -mtime +364 -delete

This example will delete all files older than 1 year.

well after some tests, these lines should also be added around lines 357 and 393 of the script.

this should be the final script, modified to keep monthly and weekly backups a certain number of days.
see constants for that at the beginning of the script.
