Apple Event on March 8

Later this month, we will get Xojo Studio… with a price rise too :star_struck:

We’ve already had Real Studio. :slightly_smiling_face:

I think this is a good idea for 27 inch “iMacs” going forward. Here’s why.

You want a “regular” 27"’ iMac? Get a Mac mini with the Studio display.

You want an iMac Pro instead? Get the Mac Studio with the Studio display.

Mix and match, the “Pro-ness” of it depends on which computer you choose.

In either configuration? The two-piece setup blows away the previous Intel iteration. (in fact, the “non-Pro” two piece configuration probably equals or beats the former iMac Pro).

There’s a lot of flexibility in going “two piece” for the large screen “iMac”, and for people who still want the computer inside the screen as a single piece desktop, the 24" M1 iMac remains.

This also provides many more configurability options (caveat: at time of purchase, not afterwards, do not complain about this). You can customize the display with either/or the height adjustment option ($399, drastically reduced from the $999 charged for the Pro Display XDR), and nano textured glass ($299, again drastically reduced from the $999 charged for the Pro Display XDR). The computer component for either the Mac Mini or Mac Studio is significantly more customizable than the previous options available for the Intel-based 27" iMac or iMac Pro.

And of course, nobody’s forcing anyone to buy the Studio display. Any display will work, including older non-Retina displays via adapters to USBC/TB. So now you could have an “iMac” that’s still the iMac, but with any display of your choice.

Rumors are suggesting a Studio Display Pro in June, featuring mini LED and ProMotion. I have my doubts, as that would feel awful for somebody that just bought the Studio Display. Price is likely way up there too. 2k would probably be my limit, but I’d expect it would cost more than that.

Xojo is probably the most CPU-intensive app that I use. Without having tested a Mac Studio yet, would there likely be any substantial advantage to using it on a 32GB Studio M1 Max vs. the 16GB Mini M1 for running, building, and simply working in the IDE? I realize it’s subjective, but by substantial I mean enough to warrant the difference in price.

Not really. Xojo is largely single core, and single core performance between all M1 variants is nearly identical. Building (not debug building, as I understand it, but I could be wrong) is multi core and does see some benefit from the additional cores.
