Not me
You’d have to convince Dana that she should take on organizing more conferences per year - large or small they still take time & effort and she has many other duties beyond organizing XDC.
I’m sure Christian would agree that organizing even a small conference is a non-trivial task. I know I spent many non-billable hours getting the two ARBP conferences setup (and that was with some help). Of course, the more you do the easier they become but it’s still not a task that I would gladly take on again.
@Norman: With “you” xojo inc is meant in general.
@Bob: Maybe my english is not clear enough. I talk about what a provider (xojo) is willing to do or not.
As a customer it’s not my problem how things can happen or what cost there are.
We are a software company in germany (accounting software under windows) with 1.600 customers and about 25 Distributors that market and support dealers and endusers. We organize a conference 4 times a year for the distributors to provide them with the newest infos about development and marketing issues and to response to their proposals and critics.
We do this because we want to sell our software. So there is a return on investment. Not directly, but in a realistic time. Let me say that we develop and market our software since 1983 (look at www.rhv.de) and now we want to go to the next step and provide the OS X and iOS Market with solutions.
Please excuse my long explanation. I think that was necessary to show you that i know what i’m talking about.
For my point of view it is a poor argumentation to tell my customers that there is not enough money to support them.
And as a Development Company with a 30 Year History i have to take care on my ROI. What i mean is - the decision to develop our software with a specific development environment is not easy because i have to look at the underlaying company to ensure that our work is safe for the next years.
Don’t misunderstand my direct words - i’m (still) a satisfied user but the company policy in this case doesn’t help me.
All I said was that it would be too expensive to do XDC in Europe right now. We bring the whole company to XDC and put on a 3-day conference with 30+ sessions, etc. We have not said anything about doing a smaller event or conference in Europe. In fact, we have done them before - in 4 countries. They were not hugely popular, which is why we haven’t continued to do them. We may do them again if there’s more interest though.
It’s OK Dana - i respect your arguments.
But Norman says:
I’d still like to see group(s) / individuals get started putting “something” together since XDC isn’t going to be in Europe for the foreseeable future<<
That means to me that the customers have to organize “something” (what a word for a user meeting) - xojo then provide us with some personal.
Now i’m not willing to continue that - i’ve told you my opinion and it’s up to you to think about it or not.
Thanks for your response.
My personal preference, prefaced by "I’d still like to see" for how to get “something” organized - user meeting conference etc - more rapidly would be to have a user group involved or even spearhead it.
That’s NOT to say Xojo Inc will or won’t do something
But thats not up to me to organize - thats up to Dana and you have her reply on that already
To avoid confusion about my personal desires / preferences and official company policy this will be my last reply on this thread
and for being remote for setting up both events, you did a great job.
Thanks, I had plenty of help in Atlanta in setting that one up. If memory serves you and Kevin both did some location scouting, right?
A video conference with well prepared work can be nearly as good as sending people overseas and far less expensive. Feelings to for meeting these people less. ![]()
Now that we have make a 360° view, can we concentrate on the where, when and how ?
(eventually who)
I travel a lot and Dana is right about this. You may get lucky and randomly find someplace like New Jersey that might work (no seriously, they are sometimes really cheap), but on a consistent basis it’s going to be Orlando and Vegas.
As someone mentioned, summer might be better because folks with children in school could just drag them along or even drop them off at a relatives house (hard to do the latter when they’re in school sometimes). But then you’re looking at two venues that are frankly rather intolerable in the summer climate-wise.
I just got back from Toronto. Great weather for this time of year. But really expensive.
For USA, it would be nice if they could cycle around the country, so people from Europe have a chance to see different parts of the states
PS: You guys saw my idea for an event in Netherlands?
I did some work but Kevin did most of it. Kevin does a lot for the Xojo community in Atlanta.

I don’t travel like I used to but still travel a lot more than most. Some of the smaller (think Nashville and Memphis) cities have hotel rates that are in the same ballpark as Orlando. I remember renting a hotel room in Memphis a few years back for 1/3 the price it was at the same hotel chain as Dallas. I was pleasantly shocked.
So there are options other than Orlando (which I like) and Vegas.

Disagree, if i want to travel to USA i do it in my holidays. I like the easy to access places with low hotel rates.
Miraculously, Las Vegas and Orlando are very easy to reach (from many parts of the world).
Both cities are in my opinion quite boring (sorry, but I attend neither amusement parks nor I like to gamble), but I do not want to visit this places for fun, but to attend to conferences. For this they offer large advantages (availability and price).
And about Orlando and Las Vegas, I have to say the Orlando atmosphere is much better.
As @Bob Keeney already pointed in past, in Orlando was possible to meet at the bar, enjoy a beer, talk and socialize, while this was not possible at Las Vegas.
A good point !
I remember the two Orlando conferences as very sociable. Las Vegas was more anonymous.
A quick googling provided me this:

And for alternative to common places:

One thing going for Orlando or Vegas is that flights seem much cheaper from Europe. I have no doubts Austin has its own charm, but I am not ready to spend the price of a MacBook just to get to the conference.
