Text vs String

the rabbit hole goes deeper!?

Not surprised actually. I deal with HL7 and DICOM, both horribly complex stuff beyond any reasonable human need but, well, there you go…

@Bob Keeney 's advise is generally fairly reasonable.

Just being lazy. Honestly.

Until Text becomes more mainstream/mandatory in desktop and web frameworks I’m not going to worry about it much. There will come a point where it makes more sense to use but that point isn’t now, in my opinion.

I will use the same thought because I am in good company, which does not make me feel so bad. kkkkk

I am coming back to Xojo to start some new Desktop projects. It seems to me that I should always just use Text. Bob seems to imply by his statement that he is “lazy”, that somehow using Text is harder. In what way is that? What makes exclusively using Text “harder”?

Is it basically compatibility with the old framework and having to convert to string for some interactions with the old framework? Is that the big sticking point?

Thanks. Just trying to understand the issue better.

So, after I have dealt today with several forum posts about the text type and read that this data type should work extremely slow under Window and Linux, I wonder if Xojo has changed something about it in the last years. Has anyone made experiences and tests? I would be interested in the direct comparison to the string type.

You know Text has been deprecated?

That was also my feeling until one of the Xojo developers expressed this sentence in the feedback:

Unfortunately Xojo has not yet taken a position on this thread: https://forum.xojo.com/58231-to-the-xojo-team-ask-for-a-reliable-statement-about-the-datatyp
There is a reason why I use the text datatype, because unfortunately the string datatype does not have all the properties of text. Unfortunately there is no alternative.

OK, as long as you’re aware. Yes, Text is very handy, but as far as I know, the speed issues on non-Mac platforms has been been addressed.

My knowledge is limited though since we moved away from it because of those issues.
