Google is talking smack

Does this affect all Google searches, or just those returned to mobile devices?

Your quote reminds me to a similar one written by Conn Iggulden in his historic Emporer series

Here in Europe the momentum of Google is not falling, this would be exaggerated, but Google is under close inspection by EU: http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/5/8733901/google-first-comment-eu-antitrust-charges
But I am afraid, they will just pay their fine, get rid of any charges and nothing else will happen… politics is a dirty business…

We live in strange times of NSA mass survaillance and erosion of civil rights…

I remember when the EU went after Microsoft in 2007 for having bundled Internet Explorer into Windows at the detriment of Netscape. The end result close to a decade later is that Netscape is no more and de facto nobody questions the fact that an OS should have its own browser.

The recent case brought against Google by the EU seems to me the result of a deep misunderstanding. Google is not a public service. It has indeed become a monopoly, but has no mandate and requirements, as it would have happened if it had been granted exclusivity by a government. Google is a business, and as such, it is free to display its own services the way it wants on its pages.
The misunderstanding comes when the EU says “you are a monopoly, so you do not have the right to manipulate results to promote your own services”. This is forgetting that Google provides search results for free, on an as-is basis, without any sort of preliminary understanding that it should be fair or neutral. Because Google has constantly presented itself as a benevolent “should not do evil” company, people came to assume it is supposed to be a public service.

In reality, Google is no more neutral than any other advertisement based business, would that be the guys who sell placards, add pages in magazines or TV commercials. Google uses free search to lure viewers and serve them as pray to advertisers. Period. Now when they charge advertisers to get a better ranking and at the same time avail themselves of the top rank to promote the copy cat services, that becomes a lot more debatable. I remember that travel agent who paid a small fortune to have a good ranking, only to end up on second page because Google favors its own travel service. That is indeed unfair. For some reason, people used to love hating Microsoft. It maybe time that people stop loving to love Google. It is no more benevolent than the Redmond firm…
