It CAN be done. Apple rejected the new version of Print Window because it has a folder icon (and a dated one at that) in its app icon. I replied back to them saying that they had approved the precious version with the exact same icon. They replied back saying they would grant it because they had granted precious versions.
Of course, I have absolutely no illusions they will allow this indefinitely and so am working in a revised icon.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
But what you describe is an issue because the folder image was used in the application icon. Using Apple images for menus and toolbars is actually recommended in the Apple Human Interface Guidelinesā¦
