Thank you very much to all of you.
Interesting to see, that some see improvements with the new API2 and other don’t.
I just made use of the sale today and grabbed a pro license with 30% discount.
I will try to rebuild one of my simpler tools I’ve created with Livecode. But first I have to find a tutorial with some basic steps…
Your name sounds familiar. Didn’t we have some correspondence some years ago in the comments of some LC sessions about tsNET? But I could also be wrong.
Anyway. Are you already familiar with the Xojo syntax or are you also starting from scratch?
You have a good memory. I was definitely dealing with TSNet back then so more than likely we probably did talk. I am new to Xojo but a way long time ago I did program with real basic which I believe Xojo used to be.
hello @Matthias_Rebbe, @Phillip_Smith and all the other LC refugees. don’t mind me, i’m just doing the same thing that all of you are - trying to decide what my companies’ next tool is going to be, because the LC Create pricing es mucho loco y no bueno.
on the 4d comments - things have changed. we ignored 4d between versions 2k4 and v17 - about 15 years. things have definitely changed, over there. it has become a great platform, again.
only pay for number of desktop clients, regardless of the number of server instances deployed
web server includes unlimited web connections
upgrades included with maintenance
their REST server is stupid-expensive (just like LC’s new model), but the good news is that you can almost trivially write your own (ours is about 400 lines of code, total), and there are several github repos with 4d rest server libraries.
I am not yet a LC refugee.
I’m currently thinking about a plan B in case I turn my back on LC completely after the end of life of LC 10 (classic).
I took the chance and purchased the currently discounted Xojo Pro. I have now 12 months to find out whether it is a good replacement for Livecode or not.
i’m not a refugee, yet, either, but i’m very seriously considering switching to something else, and handing our apps off to be rewritten. i have another tool in mind, that we are carefully evaluating, first.
Would you be willing to share what other tool you are considering. If so, could you please send me a pm or an e-mail to my public livecode-uselist e-mail adress?
Mike Kerner & Mattias Rebbe (and All),
I am in the same boat. I just finished writing Heather (Livecode Support) a long email explaining my disappointment in the new pricing structure. What a shame. Ridiculous
Anyway, I have purchased the pro version of Xojo as well and I am eager to learn it. I have found that the videos online (youtube) are of an older version and I don’t want to spend the time going through them just yet.
Is there a better tool to learn Xojo? Is anyone interested in giving me one hour phone sessions for a fee to help me learn Xojo?
Thank you folks!!
Not really, most of the training materials were outmoded overnight by a major API version. My current recommendation is to just start building your idea and look things up in the documentation as you need them.
You are also welcome to post here for advice if you get stuck on something. Unfortunately, lately people don’t seem to realize when not to post – so you may struggle to get a good, quick answer here. You’ll have to work out who you can trust for good, factual, actual answers.
If you’re willing to trust my 8 years of full time experience with Xojo, developing solutions professionally for a wide variety of industries, I offer consulting services like this
I am totally new to Xojo, although I’ve purchased a Web/DatabaseSrv/Console license in 2013, but never get used to it.
This will not happen with my current license.
I need a Plan B in case something really bad happens to LC…
I’ve just downloaded a free book “Introduction to Programming with Xojo” which shows a copyright “2021-2023”. So it seems to be very current. I found it here http://www.xojo.com/learn/
In case you’re not aware, another resource is http://www.xdevmag.com which is published every two months with numerous articles on the latest Xojo features and other useful programming techniques & tricks. You can even purchase back-issues.
As well, they host a library of e-books written by various forum members on a wide range of Xojo topics, see https://www.xdevlibrary.com
At least the website reminds of me of good old days when I was working at CompuServe and developing websites on a Sun Enterprise E250 in the late 90s
The articles might be of good quality, but the website reflects the opposite. Besides, I hate to zoom on my mobile phone to be able to read something. The guiy responsible for the website should be fired. The same applies for the guy from xdevlibrary.com
