Help?

I’m tearing my hair (what’s left) out over these bugs…

I have a 10.11.4 system that is 99% great, but when it fails, it fails badly.

Symptoms:

  • Keynote will occasionally be unable to auto-save the document. When this happens, I can no longer Save it as well. I can however Save As (Duplicate) and save just fine and don’t lose any work. (I’m not alone: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5497463 )
  • Keynote occasionally loses track of ALL my videos. The only way to recover from this is to manually re-load every single video file in my keynote project. (I’m not alone: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7009032 )
  • System Preferences / Keychain is OFF, but when I click the “Options…” I get a beachball then nothing happens.

Log data:

  • When these problems are happening, Console.log typically shows a bunch of errors, most of which have to do with sandbox, and they seem to be sandbox errors suggesting that the Keynote app can’t write to my SSD any longer.

What I’ve tried:

  • Rebooting (sometimes seems to fix the problems for a while, but they always return)
  • Disk Repair
  • Deleting and re-creating System/Preferences/Internet Accounts.
  • Spotlight Rebuild of /

Theories:

  • Since a perfectly normal system goes wacky and cant write to the SSD, and I see a bunch of sandbox errors, I have a hunch this is all Sandbox related.
  • Since I see weirdness with my iCloud settings, I’m suspicious of bad account settings.

Examples of log errors:

Considering 10.11.4 is in Beta, Shouldn’t you be reporting these to Apple?

Oops, sorry, typo: 10.11.3

( I do have some 10.11.4 systems for testing but that’s not where I’m seeing the bugs.)

  • what does drivedx report about your boot drive ? http://binaryfruit.com/drivedx
  • what kind of mac are you using (model, year)
  • does the problems really come after installation of 10.11.3 or was there some problems before ?

Have you tried with another user? The problems only occur with Keynote or also with other apps? When did the problems start?

Thanks for the tips - I’m still doing research but so far every specific bug I find ends up in a long discussion on Apple’s site where other people are saying “me too”.

  • Beatrix’ suggestion of trying another user account is a good one, although since some of the issues are sporadic it might take a while to show the bugs are/are not there.
  • I’ve run disk first aid and no problems.
  • I notice the problems seem worse during TimeMachine backup: during a TM backup, spotlight seems to fail mysteriously (if I search for something I get the “indexing…” message)
  • Many of these problems (such as Keynote) started in 10.10, but are noticeably worse in 10.11.

And what is kind of amusing is that I have zero trouble with any non-Apple products: Xojo, Microsoft Office, FileMaker, etc. all work fine. I’m only seeing problems with Apple apps: Keynote, Preview, Finder etc.
