Worldwide legal Differences?

Hi,
I am a bit lost with regards to my app not meeting the legal requirements for the country in which the purchaser lives.

Example:
If I have software which is tailored for the UK market, all will be ok - BUT if a user from another country purchases my app - there may be a legal requirement in their particular country which requires my app to be encrypted.

In yet another country, there may be a legal requirement which requires a notification is displayed somewhere.

How does a developer ensure that his / her app does not contravene legal requirements from other countries?
Hope that made sense

Thank you all in advance.

without knowing your app or what it does/collect/use for data, it is hard to answer your question.

I have gone the route of making it 100% legal in your home country, and do “best effort” to meet the requirements of the countries around the world. And if I find out that there is a missing requirement, I fix it and release a update.

Talk to your lawyer. If you don’t collect personal information you “should” be fine.

Thank you both.

Scott is mostly correct unless you make a version that is targeted at a different country. In that case you need to watch the laws for that country also.

For example, if you create an application that follows the laws in the UK but create a version targeted at (and probably localized for) Russia, then you need to make sure that the application does not violate any Russian laws also. I don’t believe that you can be held liable if someone from a different country gets your program from a UK server but you could be if the app is hosted on a Russian server.

I’m not a lawyer but I’ve done enough international corporate work to figure that if you are localizing an app then you should watch the laws for where you localize.

Enlist a Lawyer/Solicitor that has a specialty in software and in that specific country. This is the only way to be as sure as you can be until (hopefully not) legal action would test it.

Thanks.

The annoying thing is that my software if for the UK, but my website is hosted on a U.S server :frowning:
Unfortunately, I do not have, and cannot afford a lawyer, so I am just trying to get a feel for what other;s do.

Thank you all for your input.

Well certainly I am not a lawyer, I don’t pretend to play one on TV, and I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but Apple does have a “standard minimum” EULA that you may choose to use some of for your app. Have you looked at that yet?

Use at your own risk

This may be a good starting point for you.
