# Upgrading to

I want to upgrade from Xojo “Version 2026 Release 1.2” to “Version 2026 Release 3”. My Desktop application is working fine on R1.2 but fails on startup in R3 (debug mode):

Error message on starting the build: “An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The application must shut down.”

The error code of the NilObjectException is 0 and there is no message coming along with it. I have checked the current Xojo online Desktop documentation but can’t see that something has changed I should adapt.

Tested on Macbook Pro (Max 1), macOs: Goldengate

Any ideas what went wrong or what I should adjust?

it looks to me like RootFolder is somehow not there.

Awww, just checked, you’re right… usr/local exists but not /usr/local/opt. I have to investigate in detail. Looks like R1.2 was more tolerant about paths. Thank you!

/usr/local/opt would exist on an Intel Mac with Homebrew installed. Your code would have handled that. Have you also migrated devices?

add something like “if RootFolder.child(“libpng”) \<\> nil” and .Readable to avoid this in the future.

Also very helpful input, will consider and yes, there is home-brew installed.
