Touch Bar in Xojo

The new rMBP should be a faster - how much will vary based on what your current rig is
And that it has 4 TB 3 ports should boost I/O and external monitor support a pile
Those things will be useful

BUT since the 15" rMBP will be nearly 5K up here decked out it IS a tough sell to my wife :stuck_out_tongue:
And, for my usage, that it only boots 10.12 is less useful
I routinely boot 10.9, 10.10, 10.11 and 10.12 on my current rig so it may just continue doing duty until it keels right over from old age or gets shoved off the cliff by Apple

After a quick look at the API, it first looks very similar to the toolbar API. Would be great for Xojo to implement this using their new interops

Watched as much of the event as I could and while it seems cool, I have to confess that I donā€™t see the killer featureā€¦ before you say anything; so far what I see are mainly functions that you would normally interact with via the trackpad, so to use them via the Touchbar, you have to move your hands from the trackpad, look down at the Touchbar and then interact with it. Once done you then revert to original position to continue working.

Once this has been out for a while and some really clever people have figured out some really cool uses.

BTW, TouchID on the MBP wasnā€™t a surprise, but a worthy addition and more useful than the Touchbar IMHO.

And the price. Did anyone see the prices? Itā€™s cool but not that cool.

We developers need to support the ā€œnext shiny thingā€ because users expect this.

Iā€™m fine with Christian writing a plugin. But how do I see the result without having such a Macbook? There is a simulator for XCode.

The main thing about the TouchBar is that it is intended to be used for fullscreen work. You could also use a second monitor for your controls, though that might be a bit difficult when on the move.

Today (I mean in 2016) ?

But, once done, you have it ready for the tons of MBPTB who comes to the market in 2017Ā…

i disagree. Once you work with a touch screen laptop, and swap to a MacBook Pro after 5 minutes, the touch screen is missing. Only that is significant: a Touch Screen is a major plus for your productivity. BUT: you have to made that check to agree.

Doh ! iPhones and iPads are Touch Screens, isnā€™t it ?

I own a 2 in 1 Laptop OC (Laptop + Tablet on Windows 10) and a MacBook Pro. I do not only tested what I wrote earlier, I use that everyday. I surprise myself to click on the MacBook Pro screen, moves items from the Desktop (still on the screen), etc.

OK, after some seconds, I stop doing that and be back to the trackpad (I do not use a Mouse anymore on that MacBook Pro, mainly because 2 USB Ports are far from usefull). I have troubles with the PC Laptop trackpad (I need a mouse there but I have only two USB ports too there).

Ahhā€¦ Now that makes more sense. I personally donā€™t like apps in full screen, so I never think about it.

I really like the new Touch Bar, but I canā€™t afford me the new MacBook Pro.

I was thinking.
Maybe that an app, like Duet, can add the possibility to let the iPad work as a Touch Bar.
It can have much more items on the screen than the Touch Bar.
I really believe that in the near future there will be an app that is capable of doing that.

Somebody also suggested that Apple keyboards might get the Touch Bar.

The Adobe demo was showing some great things that can be done with the touchbar. The otherwise menu delved features are just available on the spot. I may be the only here but the touchbar will be a huge thing for macOS.
I do not want a vertical touchscreen thats is awkward to access/handle. Not to speak about the grease finger marks on your big touchscreen.
A big trackpad and touchpad is way better imo. Much more natural.

Yeah, its 3200eur here for the top range. Previously it was 2799eur. It didnā€™t kept me from ordening it. Still, it is a too high price tag for most people.

Price:

and I read on a French site that the power cable is no more in the box: only the small adapter is delivered. The power cable cost is 25Ā€ (if my memory is correct)Ā…

BTW: it tooks them more than one hour to start to talk about the MacBook Pro, and they talk about the one without the Touch Bar after the two others. I do not think it have something related to suspense.

Iā€™ve been waiting for yesterdayā€™s presentation after my MacBook Air 11" suddenly ā€œdiedā€ a few months ago. Obviously, and as other people did, Iā€™ve been waiting for the new MacBook Pro generation in order to step on itĀ… but not, thank you.

I think, as others do, that the Touch Bar, Touch ID and Thunderbolt 3 interfaces doesnā€™t worth (for me) the extra amount of money I should pay for them.

Obviously the Touch Bar has landed to stay on Apple products, but better to wait for it to the next generation. Thats all.

Instead, Iā€™m more inclined to consider the MacBook Pro 13" (old 2015 model) upgraded to 16 GB RAM and 256 GB of SSD for 1929 Euros, just a little bit less that I should pay for the new MacBook Pro 13" with Touch Bar, Touch ID with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSDĀ… plus the adaptors in order to continue using my current external devices.

And Iā€™m even more inclined to find a good Tech Support service who can fix the broken piece of my MBA 11" (if possible), instead to change all the motherboardĀ… as Apple Genius Bar suggested.

All in allĀ… too much ā€œhypeā€ for what we get with this update. I just hope the graphic board doesnā€™t melts Ā—as they do with previous generationsĀ— as a consecuence of the new squeezing on productā€™s volume.

Maybe the next oneĀ… after other 2 years w/o product upgrade? :-/

Hi Javier,

SSD 256GB is a bitĀ… not enough. If you can try to get a 512GB.

If you are lucky, but I have doubts something can be done in the MLB. These were usually multi-couches MLB and only with luck something can be done. 25 years ago, at Apple, the repair was to replace the faultive spare parts (MLB, 3.53 Drive, CD-ROM / DVD, etc.).

I cross my fingers.

I jumped at the new MBP because my current internal 1TB SSD is completely full, even with most of my graphics moved to an external drive. So Iā€™m thrilled to get a 2TB internal SSD, despite the high $$.

SSD prices are dropping. 8TB SSDs are reasonable priced in Enterprise Storage Arrays these days and 15TB ones will be soon (End of Year/Q1 next year). So expect bigger and badder drives soon.

+1

MBS is king

First third party app to work on the Touchbar http://www.cultofmac.com/451661/pull-finger-someone-made-fart-app-touch-bar/

now THAT makes the new MacbookPro worth the bucks  [lol]

Jokes aside, while I donā€™t think the Touchbar is a replacement for a touch screen, Iā€™m keen to see what 3rd party devs will use it for. Iā€™m hoping that Apple can prove me wrong and that this can truly be a innovative way of working with your Mac that really improves usability.

Looking Final Cut Pro, Adobe PhotoShop and DJee, cool things can be done for sure.

One thing I was asking myself: what happens when apps are using the F1 ā€¦ F12 function keys. Does the Touchbar shows the Function buttons? If not, I guess such app can be easily made and you can make some money out of it.
