The difference is that this was a tight kept secret; they quite rightly didn’t want people to know. Blackberry sure as heck didn’t want potential customers to know and the law agencies didn’t want criminals to know either.
The Apple v.s. FBI campaign was a PR nightmare waiting to happen for someone, the FBI tried to paint Apple as terrorist sympathizers and Apple tries to paint the U.S. government as being no better than the British.
Having a third party involved in the end was the most amicable way of resolving this case; however I’m not sure that I believe it’s the truth.
