Hi,
I was thinking of purchasing the new Apple tv when it is released, but I am unsure about the log in process.
Is there some kind of simple password which needs to be entered when you initially turn it on?
If I have to keep manually logging in to the app store / iCloud every time I wish to view or search for movies etc - it will be extremely annoying and laborious.
On the other hand - if I set it to automatically log in to the app store / iCloud whenever it is turned on - it would then obviously become a security risk should the device become stolen.
Does anyone have any idea how the logging in, and security features work together?
Ideally it would make sense if you could set an initial password when the device is first turned on - but then require the app store / iCloud password only when you wish to purchase.

Thank you all in advance.
No, you login once. That’s it. It would be insane to keep logging in.
I’ve the dev kit of the new Apple TV arriving tomorrow. Cost £1. Thanks New Apple!
Gavin,
Do you mean that you initially have to manually log in to iCloud / App store each time the device is first turned on, but then you remain logged in until the device is turned off.

You log in when you set up the Apple TV and you do not have to log in again at any point after that unless you manually log out. Powering down the device does not log you out.

It doesn’t even log you off when you switch it off. You stay logged in until you log out.
Oh dear - that doesn’t sound very secure.
Guess I will have to pass on that then :(
I haven’t tried it but I would bet that you would need to re-enter your password when joining a different Wifi network.
In theory you’d just have to change your Apple ID password and the passwords to any of the other services you have connected on Apple TV. I’ve had an older model for years and have had to enter my new Apple ID password on the Apple TV whenever I change it. Can’t speak to anything about the yet to be released model.
How I wish I could get my Phone and Mac to work like that.
(They cant even agree what my iCloud password is.
One of them always says its the wrong password. So I change it, and then another machine complains.
I can never log in on all my machines with the same password.)

That’s very odd. I would log out of all your devices and then go to appleid.apple.com and change it there. Then update on each device in turn.
Thanks for the information everyone.
I will definitely refrain from buying one until I can find out exactly what the situation is.
Purchases require you to confirm by entering your password though dont they? (I have never been allowed to use my AppleTV since we bought it … ha! MY appleTV … what a laugh)

Nope. You are offered a “Are you sure?” dialog. You do not need a password to buy or rent anything, if you’ve already logged in once.
Now, to be fair, I think you can set parental controls to make it more secure, something I’m going to have to do soon with my ever expanding collection of children. (I’m pretty sure most of them are mine).
@Gavin Smith
Amuse you - why? What is so strange about being concerned about security???
If someone says that you log in once and stay logged in, then naturally this is not ideal, security wise.
Therefore it makes sense to remain concerned until this question could be answered definitively

If someone breaks into your house, assuming you’re physically safe and assuming they steal your Apple TV and assuming they connect it to wifi without wiping it, then yes, I guess they could rent Disney’s Frozen and you’d be out of pocket for a few quid. However, you could change your password easily and get a refund from Apple almost as easily. I’m amused because it seems a little paranoid - it’s not a mobile device.
I’m pretty sure my Roku works in exactly the same way.
If someone purchased “Frozen” on my account, I would be extremely annoyed, as I already own it on DVD!!!
Unauthorised access to my account could potentially run into the thousands, not just a few quid.
