Modelling tools

I’m starting with a new and as far as I can see ‘big’ project. Before I get my hands dirty I want to have an impact analysis in terms of user interface, business logic and backend requirements. Who of you use modeling tools? UML or other diagramming? Any tools you can recommend, maybe in cooperation with Xojo or tools you feel comfortable with?

Thanks.

I use Omnigraffle for all of my design diagrams. (It is similar to MS Visio)

I use “SimpleMind” (:Mind mapping suite) for mobile/portable devices and “Mockup Creator” (use to be mockup maker) to design the app/window layouts rapidly before poking around in Xojo for large projects.

Best for Mac: Omnigraffle
Best for Windows: Visio
(in my experience)

For sure there are some free tools but Omnigraffle and Visio are (in my opinion) way easier to use.

I’m used to Archimate, and I have always used Archi. It is a modeling language like UML. Unfortunately Archi is discontinued.

I know Omnigraffle and ofcourse Visio but I was wondering if someone uses UML or similar diagrams.

Archimate is more used for modeling business logic and application layer/business layer interactivity etc. though you can model application and database diagrams. It is not suitable for developing user interfaces.

Well u can still create UMLs with Visio and Omnigraffle (?)
And even more important: for which OS?

Doesn’t matter… I work on both platforms

Especially for this three steps i recommend Omnigraffle (like i said before). I tried many UML-Creator/Designer (for OSX/Win) but in the end i sticked to Omnigraffle. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d have to vote for Omnigraffle on the Mac as well. It’s very powerful and there are a number of templates you can download that make life easier for things like UML and even interface design.

Swordsoft Layout is a nice inexpensive ($6.99) mockup tool that doesn’t require a subscription like most others.

Very reminiscent of Pencil.

For several projects I used Enterprise Architect
With version 11 I think it’s much to extensive and complex. and yes, it’s for Microsoft oriented people.
I’d like to have a good tool for UML, one for database modeling, and one for wireframing, which are just lightweight and simple to use

One or two of the WWDC sessions I mentioned at http://www.xojonews.com/news/the-xojonews-guide-to-the.html might help, particularly the prototyping one.

Thanks Gavin,

wasn’t aware of that website by the way… I’ll take a look at these WWDC sessions.

Hoi Dirk,

That Aivosto/Visustin site (strange names though) looks promising? It pretends to build flowcharts from your source… Amazing.

Thanks
