MariaDB and Malformed Packets

Upgrading a client application. They have a MariaDB 5.5.x (not sure of exact version yet). When I attempt to connect to the database I’m getting a ‘malformed packet’ error with Xojo 2016 R3. I go back to the old (Real Studio) version it works just fine so it’s obviously the Xojo MySQLCommunityServer plugin that’s the cause.

Anyone seen this? Any workarounds other than upgrading the database?

The MariaDB version is 5.5.53, the current stable release. Am I missing something? I would expect the last MySQL plugin to work with this no problem.
