good news is that Apple is repairing the machines for free (takes 5-7 days as they mail it to a depot to fix). Even if your warranty/AppleCare has expired.
my appointment is tomorrow to prove to the genius that my machine is affected.
bad news is that it works only if the mac is less than 4 years old … invoice proof…
if you took good care of your macbook, and did not make it heat too much, then your graphic card will take longer to die,
and you will be out of the process to get a free repair !
here in europe, we have a law claiming that a known defect cannot have a ending date, but you will have to persuade the apple rep on the phone to get an exception. good luck.
all models are concerned
even the 2010 macbookpros were concerned, but they are all more than 4 years old and the program is over for 99% of them.
I only know of the 2009 macbookpros that did not have the defect (luck ?)
even the previous macbookpros 15" 2006-2008 had all the nvidia problem. they almost all died from that.
In France, take contact with your Premium Service Provider… not AppleCare. It will repair your MacBook with graphic card problem even if the laptop was chocked. Near Paris contact me in PM for address.
