I don't understand why all this discussions about having nick names

I wonder why having long discussions about having the possibility to login onto Xojo’s Forum as anonymous user.

As it is now, you can do that. Just create another email account with a different full name, as I did on this one.

You will never be 100 per cent anonymous, as the owner of the web-side will have a log of your ip address. Also when you are confirming your new Xojo account from an email client. Makes no different if you are using local email clients, google or other web clients. Your local platform and your public ip address will always be attached to email.

So why all this discussions and flame wars.
Let’s do what we likes most, share Xojo code in a peaceful environment.

The question I have for you, Geoff, is why are so many technically brilliant people so inept when it comes to understanding people. If you ever have the misfortune of being victimized by identity theft and Internet fraud you will understand the apprehension over having your real name posted on the Internet where it can be harvested by the miscreant bots that incessantly troll the Internet for exactly such information. After I disabled forum access for my account I was dismayed to find my name still on display without having to log in.

Insulting (you locked my thread on this issue) and angering your customers is not a particularly good business decision because I now fully intend to transition my company away from Xojo. This is your sandbox, so you can make whatever rules your want for your playmates. As a business owner and a customer, however, I never stay with a supplier that infuriates me.

Nobody misunderstands the privacy concern. They just weigh it in this context differently than you do. No need to toss insults over a disagreement.

That’s pretty much it. Nobody is going to have their identity stolen over having “Thom M” visible to Google. If somebody has access to the more personal information necessary, they’re certainly going to have access to the name too. There’s no threat here.

Anyway, I’m most anonymous with my realname as I always use the same nickname in all forums.
As for my avatar, I always use the same too and it’s most known that my “ugly” head, and most funny too.

It’s not a so big problem, but we are all the same and we DO like to have the choice.

I’m on iPad and don’t want to disconnect because I don’t have my password to connect again. I’m not sure but I remember that I had to log in with the name I gave when bought my Xojo licence. Then I won’t buy another licence to enter another name.

I agree!

I agree!

It would be really good if members concentrated on making useful contributions and ideas (and asking for help, etc.) instead of nick names and privacy issues. It seems that the rules (written or unwritten) have been established so if you don’t like it then why not lodge a well reasoned complaint (send a private email or message not a forum conversation) instead of trying to stir up trouble and make noise for the rest of the people on here who are happy to use their names and use the forum for Xojo related purposes.

This privacy stuff is getting really boring now.

We’ve had issues where users have deliberately spoofed being another user.
This sort of abuse leads to the enforcement of the policy.

So ban them from the forum. What percentage of the total posts would you say that represented, 0.00002%? Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Norman, Nice to “see” you.

Did you break down and get a Gravatar account, or has the dependency finally been removed?

And his printed name should be changed to “banned user” on his posts. Internally Xojo should see the real details.

Did you verify if it’s my true head? Maybe my true head is Mr Potatoes and the photo beside an avatar!

I understand people who would like to be anonymous, but it doesn’t make me so nervous.
Can have serious discussion staying fun. Yes, because it’s a joke. Mr Potatoes is not my real head.
And the photo beside…

We are not all the same and like it or not, we do not always have the same choices. The choice here seems to be to comply and take part or to stay away. In fact the more that this privacy thing gets dragged up the more than the rules get tightened by Xojo.

Eh? Cool, just renew then? Or if it is for someone else then get them to enter their name…

Yes, I notice too than Norman has his photo now. You look like a cup (policeman) in american movies Norman  . I understand better some of your post now
(I’m joking again  )

Norman is a cup? OH you mean COP …

Norman as a Canadian cop on a cup.

 sorry, i had a doubt, that’s why I wrote policeman in (). Effectively I meaned Cop. I’m stupid, I could have think about the movie Robocop.

If Xojo change its policy, I’ve a nickname for him : NormaCop

I give up.

Since I was seen as “breaking the rules” I signed up for a wordpress account & a gravatar account & linked all my emails to that

Honestly I’d rather NOT be the cop BUT there are a handful of users that abiding by the rules & requests we’ve made seems to be either objectionable or impossible (I’m not clear which).
So we have to enforce the rules - something I’m not doing I just remind people about them.

The reality is the more people flaunt the rules the more enforcement we may be required to do.
And there’s only a handful that are doing that but it makes it something everyone has to put up with.
