Why does it not work?

Use the interface on the website to request a CSR. A self-signed certificate is created as part of that process with a 60-day expiration.
Don’t use a self-signed certificate for production as they are susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks.
To answer your question, did you upload both the key and the certificate files?
I just found that I can just click through the SSL Wizard without entering anything. It should at least complain that I didn’t enter anything!?
