H-1B Visas 4x Higher than Commonly Believed

If you suspected that the 85,000 “cap” on H-1Bs seemed a little low, you were right. The government has finally admitted that the actual number is quadruple that - 348k last year. Turns out, there is no limit at all on non-profits, universities, and governments. Over the past 10 years, enough H-1Bs have been brought in to nearly re-staff the entire IT industry. See the data here:

spam?

What part of “off topic” don’t you understand?

And this is surprising because? This seems to me to be the accepted status quo in the US technology sector.

Accepted by who? The laid off American IT workers? The bean counters at the organizations using H1-B workers? The H1-B workers?

By all of the above (not me, but data overwhelmingly shows I’m in the minority).

laid off it workers are being replaced there ( and here) either by “outsourcing” - sending you job to a foreign country where they can pay a person pennies on the dollar

or by bringing in cheap H1-B’s (we dont really have the exact equivalent here in Canada)

neither is “accepted” by the folks being supplanted - but it is a common practice :frowning:

I have a friend who has trained replacement’s at two different companies that have “outsourced”
Both times he’s been brought back as a consultant at a substantial increase to what they were paying him before :stuck_out_tongue:
The only difference is that he’s no longer their employee (which for him is a good thing)

It reminds of this Demotivational poster

Due this this situation that I was laid off almost two years ago… I have accepted reality and am downsizing to make my 401K and SocSec hopefully last the rest of my life (ie. I’m retiring).
The company I worked for laid off over 5000 IT workers last year… I just happened to be in the first wave… Oh… and how many H1-B do they have on payroll… A LOT… lets just say there were more people in my departement where English was not their primary language (and they all shared the SAME primary language… it would be racist to say more)

It’s not racist if it’s true.

I’ve always kind of laughed at this one

We see this practice occurring but its more sending the jobs out of country than it is bringing the new bodies here
Using H1-B to replace existing people should be against the law
But then there is nothing to stop them from moving those jobs off shore :frowning:

That site has so many good ones. A friend pointed me to the site years ago and probably once a year I go back to see what new ones they have.

My personal all time favourite is https://despair.com/products/motivation
I bought this one JUST to hang up where a boss I once worked for could see it.
He was a big believer in hanging up all kinds of motivational posters around our offices.
So I “decorated” my cube.
And at first he loved it as he’d just blow by.
Until he stopped and read the caption and realized I was mocking him.
That was a singularly hilarious day
And all the other staff in our cube farm laughed out loud when he told me I HAD to take it down because it was so … (he never did give me a word)
He just stormed off and we all laughed our asses off
I think Despair inc sold a pile more that day
I know these kind of kept popping up all over the offices as we’d randomly replace his :stuck_out_tongue:

And yeah I hated working for that guy (one of the VERY few bosses I’d ever tell people to avoid like the plague)

Welcome to globalisation!

“Und wer hats erfunden?” (And who has invented it?) - Yes, the US hedge fund managers.

For instance the major so called “Swiss” banks are owned by US hedge funds and run by US chief executives. Just abusing industry friendly laws in Switzerland, which were meant to support local small businesses and not global players which give a damn about locals.
