I’ve fixed the typo in the title.
From what I understand, trial is only available within the subscription model.
That leaves non-subscription to the side.
What did I get wrong?

Indeed, but I do wonder two things.
- Can this be done without using IAP?
- As more software moves to subscription, this might actually work.
