For those who are happy to show their faces but maybe don’t want a (gr)avatar face pic…
Please just post a face pic and maybe a tag line as well or don’t post at all. Please don’t hijack this and turn it into another debate about identity.
Oh and please can you all press the ‘like’ button for my photo
59 different cancer causing chemicals in cigarette smoke are known. Nicotine is 20x more addictive than heroin. in short: Smoking is stupid. But worst of all is that smokers seem to think they have a god-given right to blow their stink into everyone’s face. And yes, I want to punch each of those bastards in the face.
My brother died of cancer last year at 45. not a pleasant way to go. And I wish, from the heart, that each of those unthinking and uncarying idiots dies the same miserable death.
Can we try to keep a few conversations on track? No disrespect Markus, my father died of lung cancer a few years ago, but can we keep some conversations ‘happy’ and stress free? My last about 3rd party has descended in to a war about identity and I thought I could create a more positive one with some people putting up their face pictures if they didn’t want to use their avatar. Please?
Yes, please. Had I realized that responding to this topic would result in me being called an “unthinking and uncaring idiot” or that my death would become an object of anticipation for others, I wouldn’t have bothered.
I am sure that Markus feels strongly about the subject, losing somebody close is always painful. I doubt that you triggered the emotional response personally - I was probably just the cigarette and so don’t take it too badly. Maybe we should just remember what this forum is for and take five minutes to consider the wording of our replies.
I have put a ‘like’ on yours, not to irritate Markus but to acknowledge your effort and community spirit to post it. Let’s all try to be friends and if we can’t be friends then at least be polite.
Anyway on to a much more positive note…
I have 7 ‘likes’ for my photo! I am feeling happy about that but I wouldn’t mind some more if anyone else is feeling generous :). I would like to see more people’s faces too so we can all like each other a bit more.
I’d like to show support for Markus and his feelings.
However, I don’t echo the same anger.
Disrespecting other people’s rights -in this case smoking around others and selfishly damaging their health while lowering the quality of life is wrong in my opinion.
A too serious picture, I know. I just had another decent one but I am dressed up on it and I thought I would let the forum chill out a little before posting that one.
I’m actually surprised at the understanding reactions to my outburst. I’m not sure if it is directed against the person or “only the cigarette” - after all it is the smoker not the cigarette in the same way that people kill, not guns. Should I be angry at the gun? I don’t like guns, but I blame the person.
I also found that any data driven reasoning (and I have been in cancer research for 20 years) is completely lost on smokers. You can’t argue with logic when it is their emotions, their feelings that are manipulated by nicotine. It is legal, “everyone” is doing it, so there is no need to be concerned for anybody. I can’t remember how often I asked my mother at least not to smoke when small kids are around - only to find her smoking 5 min later with the kids in her lap. You can’t go to dinner, have a coffee, wait for a bus, walk in the city, without some fucking idiot blowing his crap in your face - and Andrew, please don’t tell me you are not “one of them”.
Smokers only react when their emotions are engaged. Fear - because there is a lump on your throat. Rage - and they might consider why you are so pissed off. But sense? Not in a million years.
If someone wants to smoke - fine, their business. If someone thinks that gives them the right to do it in total disregard to the people around them - then yeah, I’m pissed off.
And don’t think just because you can’t see the smoke anymore after a few seconds that the cancer causing chemicals have disappeared. There are smokers all around you constantly contamination the place you live in. And people are worried about nuclear radiation? Any smoker demonstrating against nuclear power after Tschernobyl or Fukushima is a bloody hypocrit.
My mother recently posted on her facebook page that she is “tired of the patronization of smokers” and got likes from her fellow smokers. She is lucky I can’t comment on her page - I’ve never read a more unreflected bullshit in my life. She blows her stink in other peoples faces and feels patronized when someone says “please don’t do that”? Same thing just two eays ago at my aunts birthday party when I asked a cousin to smoke outside. I have yet to meet a considerate nicotine junkie - and trust me, they are junkies. Just because they are high-level functioning junkies and there are millions of them doesn’t make them any less so.

I’m not smoking. but reading this kind of comments from an exstream non smoker I find worse than sitting next to a smoker. I’m sorry to hear about your brother.
My grandmother smoke like hell, and she died at 94 years old with no problems. One day she did not wake up. And she was still very healthy at 92 years old and very active. As 92 years old she had her own house and huge garden and climbed on the roof to paint the chimney.
