I am getting to grips with App Wrapper, which is mostly excellent and highly intuitive. However the one thing I cannot seem to get right is where the final .pkg file installs my app. The best I’ve managed so far is inside a folder with ‘Wrapped’ in the name in my Applications folder. Sometimes it does into a Xojo Build folder, deep in my Applications folder.
I’ve tried starting with the app in different places before running App Wrapper. I’ve tried changing the ‘Destination’ setting in App Wrapper (it is not documented in the help). But I cannot get my app to install straight into Applications. I have searched the App Wrapper help and this forum but can’t find anyone with the same problem. This no doubt means I am doing something really stupid. Anybody able to spell it out for me ? Thanks in advance.
My experience (and I will be happy to hear if I have missed a setting somewhere)
the PKG method is too ‘clever’ for its own good.
If you have run the app before, PKG knows where it was and tries to replace it there.
That could be inside a wrapped folder if you started a copy of the app there, it could be the desktop… I have even seen it replace a copy of the app INSIDE THE TRASH.
The consolation is that your end users will almost certainly not have had a previous copy, and under those circumstances, it will install into Applications by default.
If you drag the PKG file onto the App Wrapper icon, it will open the Installer tester, not only will this then show you where all existing copies of the application are, but it will tell you where it installed the application too.
Why the Apple Installer doesn’t let the user choose or show the user where it installs too is beyond me.
That’s great, thank you, that was really confusing me ! Thank you for such swift responses on a Saturday.
It’s all about timing not that Saturday is any different than any other day to me (except that there’s more traffic about in town).
