No. We found Montreal and Quebec City very nice. But then we could not speak the language.
You should have found most Montrealers eager to help. I have witnessed that very often. I even helped tourists myself more than once, with courtesy and respect. The way it should be done.
People in Qubec (the Province) tend to follow the politeness rule that is characteristic of Canadians as a whole. Not speaking English does not equal being impolite.
So, perhaps you met an imbecile who was not pleasant. I met such people in France near Strasbourg, and also in Vancouver, in Topeka, in Chicago and in LA. But I reserve judgment on my other 30 million fellow Canadians, on the other 60 million French people and the other 300 million or so million Americans. An idiot is an idiot. In any language, any country, any religion.
