is there a way to tell Win10 that NO PASSWORD is needed to login?
This particular computer contains no documents, no contacts, never is used to “surf the net”, has no installed email etc.

on my Mac I can set a blank password, but Win10 insists on an 8+ character special sequence. There was a utility that supposedly removes the password, and it seemed to… for one reboot, now it wants it again.

And while on the subject, how can I tell it to take One Drive and shove it… it keeps nagging me to login to that, and I have no need nor desire for it.

This is a minimum usage machine… it runs Xojo and even then it does it as a remote debugger destination… and very very little else

Have you used the Netplwiz method?
Run that, and untick the ‘Users must enter a username and password to use this computer’ option

(that may be the utility you mentioned?.
It is possible that a security script has run to re-enforce the tick when you rebooted)

Run gpedit.msc
Go to Administrative Templates
Double-click on Windows Components
Double-click the OneDrive folder
Then use ‘Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage’

Yes… .sorry I didn’t mention… but I have already Done that.

Jeff… I cannot run GPEDIT.MSC because it does not exist on this machine (which FYI is BRAND NEW

Have I ever said … I hate windows?

I followed the steps in the first video that Julian posted… and everything was set exactly as it stated…
Now when I restart… it says “The user name or password is incorrect, Try Again”… and I enter the SAME password each time, and it starts up…

well that didn’t work… I made those changes… rebooted…
got the same message as above.
checked again to make sure the settings “stuck” (and they had)
rebooted again… and it just acted like normal and asked for my password like nothing had happened.

The only thing I can think of is that you’ve typo’d your password on the netplwiz screen, as that is the only way I can replicate your issue. There is no sanity check on whether that password is correct, only that the two boxes match so it is possible to enter the wrong password twice which will cause this error on reboot:

To reenter you password, in the netplwiz screen, toggle the checkbox on, hit Apply then toggle it off and hit apply and double check you’ve entered your password correctly.

Other than that, I’m all out of ideas.

That is not windows fault. it just recommends a password, but is not mandatory, if you set it, well, it was your desition.

First of all, make shure that you have a local account, and not a microsoft one. Then, its not necesary all the trouble of “autologin”, just remove the pasword.

Go into the same config screen as in the video, https://youtu.be/jXQ7Aj5uBe4?t=110, click the change button and leave a blank pasword.

If you created a microsoft account, go to the users config, create a new local account without a password, logoff, login in the local one and delete the microsoft one.

At the start windows ask you to choose what kind of account you want, for local ones, you can have no password.

This is the method that I use for my VM instances. For a load test, we create a farm of 50 Windows 10 desktop VMs and the lab team connects to our MSDN/Visual Studio team account and then adds the local account.

Just a hint at that…run “contol userpassword2” there you can setup a auto login with password (like since years in windows) :slight_smile:
