    Any kind of system that takes way too long to handle a simple request.
    (ATMs, government, and payment transactions :P)

  5. The somewhat variable interpretation of the word "urgent" in public sevices (ie people who tell you to make an urgent appointment to see a dermatologist and then say we can fit you in 3 weeks on Friday).

    Write an accounting app in C and then you'll understand where Cobol works very well :P
    For some things it is THE perfect language

    Everyone knows that a COBOL is a fantasy creature, similar to a goblin, who will jump you in a dark alley, beat you !@#$%, and steal your stuff. (Ok, that might be a Kobold, but I think it accurately describes COBOL as well.) ;)

    Sounds more like the CFO who beats you silly screaming "What do you mean it isn't 2.6???????"
    when you have code like

       i, j, k float ;

       i = 1.3 ;
       j = 1.3 ;
       k = i + j ;

    a few billion $ and that rounding error and you get a pretty big problem
    COBOL does it exactly and you get 2.6 ... exactly without thinking about it

    Oh yeah - pet peeve - THAT CFO

    SPOIP (spinning pizza of infinite patience)
    every time I touch iTunes

    And Apple for having turned iTunes into such an increasing huge pile of dreck over the last bunch of year

    Just when you think you're done working in Windows, shut down the VM, and find something you need to test in Windows.
